Renovation of City Garden Clinic

The goal of this project is to renovate the City Garden Clinic hospital in Makeni, Sierra Leone. The scope of the project has been developed in cooperation with the Smarter Hospital Foundation who is responsible to raise the necessary funding. The project is supported by the Wilde Ganzen (Wild Gees) foundation in the Netherlands and for every 100 € that is donated 50 € will be added by Wilde Ganzen.

The original project proposal for the renovation of the oldest parts of the hospital was amended, submitted to Wilde Ganzen and has met approval. The agreed budget amounts to close to 43,000 €. Our sponsor Smarter Hospital Foundation has raised her part of the funding (28,650 €) which Wilde Ganzen will supplement to the required total budget. The local building contractor Mosmed Construction and General Services will be contracted for the project implementation which is expected to start in November 2020.

Project description

City Garden Clinic (CGC) is a self-sufficient hospital in Makeni, Sierra Leone and is registered with the Ministry of Healthcare. It has a capacity of 64 beds, an outpatient clinic, a small basic laboratory, an operating theatre and a local staff of around 50 employees.

CGC was founded 12 years ago by Sierra Leonean Dr. ABD Sesay, initially as a small day clinic. Due to the high demand for high-quality health care, the clinic has grown under his leadership into a four-storey hospital that is now well-known. During those years, all available resources were used to expand and further develop the hospital, leaving no money for structural maintenance. As a result, the infrastructure and facilities of the lower two floors are in need of a thorough refurbishment and repairs since all this has now fallen below an acceptable standard, making maintaining the required hygiene difficult and endangering.

In cooperation with the Smarter Hospital Foundation a project proposal for the renovation of the oldest parts of the hospital was submitted to Wilde Ganzen and has met approval. The agreed budget amounts to close to 430 Million Leones or € 43,000. Smarter Hospital has raised her part of the funding (€ 28,650) which Wilde Ganzen will supplement to the required total budget. The local building contractor Mosmed Construction and General Services will be contracted for the project implementation which is expected to start in November 2020.

The project consists of two main parts:

  • Construction of a separate building to accommodate a digital X-ray.

It is intended to acquire a digital X-ray machine under the Extension of diagnostic and treatment project. (make a link to that button) For this equipment a separate building has to be constructed. Since Mosmed Construction will be working on the renovation, from an Economy of Effort viewpoint it has been decided to construct this building at the same time.

  • Renovation and major maintenance of the two lower floors of the hospital.

These activities encompass amongst others:

  • Painting outer walls, doors and metal work (whole hospital)
  • Inside painting
  • Plastering and painting front fence
  • Plastering of ceilings where necessary
  • Replacing all internal doors
  • Re-tiling ground floor
  • Re-tiling all sanitary spaces
  • Major maintenance of complete sanitary and plumbing installation
  • Expansion of Laboratory space
